Chick of Christchurch, says that from what lie had heard and seen in Monte Y ideo he wis prepared to believo almost anything about them. -Ho heard a story from a Quaker missionary, who truthfulness lie was prepared to vouch for, as to the method of recrut-ing the force. Owing to the difficulty of finding men who would take the work, prisoners on whom a long semteneo had been passed were given the option of service in the police or letting the law take its course. The appearance of the force certainly lent color to the story. The men were mostly half-breeds, and were tho most despicable lot of men he had ever seen.
