MAORI REPRESENTATION
(Special to Times.)
WELLINGTON.. Oct. 22. A point in regard to the system of special native representation in the House was raised by Mr Mander last night whilst speaking on the Land Bill. The attitude assumed by the thrco North Island Maori members in voting in the various divisions on the Land Bill was, he considered, unfair, seeing that their views were distinctly opposed to the House and the European settlers in their districts. These members, ho argued, should walk out of thoHouso when such important issues were being discussed. Such issues, he maintained, should not bo influenced by tho Maori vote. EAST COAST RAILWAY. .
Tho Government is being asked by Mr Boland whether they will take the necessary steps to have a strip of land reserved from P aero a across the Piako plains for future railway purposes, in view of the fact that the Acting-Minister for Public W dries has expressed the opinioiithatthe East Coast Bailway will pass along that route. It appears advisable, says Mr Boland, that this should be taken into account in connection with tho drainage operations now being carried out by the Lands Department under the direction of Mr Breakell.
