JJE RED IT Alt V ALCOHOLISM. By Dr. It. ROMME. ■Vlcoiiol does not content itself witli causing the decadence of individuals, but also aifects their descendants, and a clinical study of alcoholism would bt* incomplete if it did not deal with these distant manifestations of alcohol. The works of Denuno and Legrain supply us with very valuable information on tins point. Tho results of tho mvcsitigations of Demme respecting the fate of children belonging to alcoholic families, and other children, are briefly epitomised by Hoppe m Die following table idreu of dren of Children Alcoholic AbstainPa rents. ers. Deaths front congenital weakness 1- " Deaths from con- 0 viilsions lo ••• " Idiots b - 0 Congenital malfor- _ mat ions ° ■■■ " Delayed physical _ development o u Epileptic ‘ u Atflicted with St. Vitus’ dance .... 2••• - Defective intellect 0 ••• - In a word, AMONGST THE DESCENDANTS OF ALCOHOLICS OP NORMALLY - DEVELOPED THE PROPORTION OE al-ly-developed CHILDREN FROM THE PHYSICAL AND INTELLECTUAL POINT OF VIEW WAS 17.5 PER CENT., AND AMONGST ABSTAINERS 81.9 PER CENT. ... - Tho same facts are met with m tho investigations of Legrain, who collected 215 observations amongst ■alcoholic families, dealing with a total of 508 individuals, 9S belong■inf to tho second generation, and / to the third. In 215 cases of the first generation, intellectual and physical degeneracy occurred lob times. Tho first comprised all the degrees o'f mental degeneracy, from simple aberration of the faculties to mental debility, . imbecility,, idiocy, and moral insanity. Physical ue■*eneracy existed ill the form of ci anial malformations, congenital deafness, dumbness, and blindness, partial paralysis, convulsive movements, etc. General health was bad, and children were born dead or d-iec. shortly after birth. Thus in a familv of 1G children, representing the first generation, 10 died in their infancy, and others suffered, from mental aberration, debility, imbecilitv, convulsions, epilepsy, hysteria, and evil instincts. In the second veneration, for which Legrain collected 9S observations, dealing with 299 individuals, tho situation is yet more serious. Hardly any family was without one or more diseased children, imbeciles and idiots abounded, and many were sent to asylums. As regards deafness, dumbness, hydrocephalus, etc., these physical aliments were moro common. Premature births, births of dead children, early death, convulsions, epilepsy, meningitis, _ all. increased. The hereditary alcoholics in the third veneration numbered 17 in 7 families, all being weak-minded, imbeciles, idiots; two hysterical, two epileptic, four suffered from convulsions, one with meningitis, and three scrofula and great deb Hi tv.
