Latest reports from Newcastle state that altogether an. area of between 40 and 50 acres is affected by the creep, though only in a portion is the subsidence really serious. There are about 405 houses within the area. Amongst the premises diaanaged were the Congregational md Catholic Churches, the Alethodist mission hall, and the palatial residences of Air.- Hall .adjoining Air Woods’.
Last night the reservoir on the bill, with a holding capacity of 200,000 gallons, began leaking into the old workings below. The main reservoir, however, is Intact. The city' engineer reported last nigat that he anticipated no danger.
The estimates of damage are very wide, rauging from £40,000 to £IOO, 000.
The residents of some of the damaged houses had rather exciting experience-. No one was injured. (Received Oct. 19. 0.58 a.m ) SYDNEY, Oct. 18. The creei) is still working. Four to five shocks were felt to-day, accompanied by loud reports. This caused the majority of rifts on the earth’s surface to open out considerably. Most of the buildings damaged yesterday sustained further damage to-day. The obelisk reservoir is quito dry, the water having leaked underground.
