THE NEW SCHOOL REGULATIONS

At Monday’s meeting of the Hawko’s Bay Education Board new regulations were brought up and passed. It is provided that teaching shall bo carried on in schools tor live hours daiil.v on five dayX a week except in the preparatory classes, which shall assemble for four hours only. The •afternoon instruction must- be senarated from tho morning instruction by an interval of at- least an hour. Previously the school cay consisted of four hours and a hair. The effect of this regulation appears to he that any religions .instruction it fe desired to give must be given before 9 a.m. or after 3 p m. Another regulation sets out that corporal minisbipcnt must bo administered only in "extreme cases and not for small breaches of school discipline, and must never bo inflicted l-.v pupil tea “hens. The regulation further sets out that extremo infliction of corporal puirmlimcnt will be eaten as ail indication of lack of personal influence on the part of tho teacher.

An important- amendment in the regulations is to the effect that home lessons shall be regulated as iar as possible to the environment of each district. Excessive home lessons are not to be given, and in preparation for tlie examination no extra time is to be nut in school. In the matter of the appointment of teachers an important change is made. If the number of names sent on by the Board is four or more the committee must select two of the names, and on receipt of tho committee’s recommendation the chairman of tlio Board shall proceed to appoint the candidate whoso name is at tlie. head of the committee’s list. In addition small amendments have been made improving the general working of schools, And several anomalies liavo been removed. One of these improvements is tho abolition of the time-book.
