GOVERNMENT TAKES A HAND,

Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Oct. 16. In accordance with the views expressed by tho Government during the tariff debate, a Bill will bo introduced tlris week dealing with tlio Import duty on wheat and flour. The whole of the proposals have been considered by Cabinet and agreed upon.

POSITION AT CHRISTCHURCH, CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16.

Filour has been raised another £1 per ten and is now £l3 for sacks. No immediate increase in the price of bread is expected in consequence. There has been a falling off in the consumption of bread for some 'inic back. This is not attributed to the rise in price but to tho influenza epidemic.

PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16.

At to-day’s meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union there was a lengthy discussion on the Government’s proposal to take off the duty on wheat as soon as'Hour reached £ll per ton. It was decided to ask the Premier to •forward as ( .avly as possible copies of the proposed legislation dealing with tho duties on imported Hour and wheat.

The following motion was carried : —“That this meeting urge upon the Premier the inadvisability of interfering with the wheat and flour duties.”
