AUCKLAND, yesterday. The canvass in connection with the Y.M.C.A. campaign Jias not been attended with the success anticipated. Yesterday only £254 was roceivcd, bringing the- total up to £12,674, including the £4OOO expected to bo realised in connection with the sale of the old building. In order to raise the sum required within tho time originally specified, £4325 must bo collected in five days. The Napier syndicate which brought the Nora Niven from Home will shortly take delivery of a new trawler from Lane and Sons, of Whangaroa. Her equipment will be similar to the Nora Niven, but she is not so largo as that vessel. She will be adapted to ports such as Napier. The trawler Nora Niven has been detained owing to tho illness of Captain McAlister. Mr. Ayson, Chief Inspector, and Stephenson, Inspector of Fisheries, are detained at Auckland in consequence. The Harbor Board’s receipts lor the quarter ended September totalled £22 965. Tho general acsount shows a balance of £25,591 in credit. The income for the throe-quarterly period was £6B,OSS, ns against £59,964 for tho corresponding period of last year. Tho Nautical Court which enquired into the collision between the steamer Clansman and scow Herald found tho captain of the scow in fault in not showing n light astern, though ho •■•■ aw tho Clansman overtaking her. The Court ordered the captain of i.io scow to pay the costs of the inquiry. The Court ‘remarked upon tho apparent ignorance of some captains in record to collision regulations. There was much laxity, especially m regard to showing lights astern. DUNEDIN, yesterday. At a meeting of representatives of the bottling trade yesterday, a committee was set up to consider tho position, and a meeting will be held next Friday, when, if other firms are not prepared to agree to tlio purchase of bottles at is per dozen, Messrs Thompson and Co. will again put their price up to 2s 6d, and higher, if necessary. Sinco tho 4th inst. they have purchased, roughly, 6000 dozen at 2s 6d per dozen, and now have in stock somo 25,000 dozen, sufficient to last them two or three years. . The Dunedin branch committee ot the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Officers’ Association held a meeting last evening, and passed a resolution expressing strong disapproval of the indiscreet and ill-advised action ol the Auckland officer, who caused to be published a statement of alleged grievances existing in the Department, and affirming confidence in the present administration, especially in view of the numerous concessions recently granted and the belief that anv existing anomalies will bo removed'bv the proposed amended classification. The meeting urged the executive of the Association to take an early opportunity of condemning the injudicious nroceedings referred to. FEILDING, yesterday. The seventh annual meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Tho report showed that the district had shared in the general prosperity of the Dominion. Exports had more than doubled in the last five years. Last year’s total was over £450,000. Up to March last, for tlio twelve months, 104,671 sheep and lambs liad been railed from Feilding, and over 2000 boxes of milled butter. In moving tho adoption of the report, the president, Mr. Bramwoll, said ho thought it was time Chambers of Commerce fell into
lino with other bodies in putting a stop to Socialistic legislation. New Zealand was prosperous, as shown by the excess of deposits over withdrawals in the savings banks of £1,000,000, and the working classes should be well satisfied. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. A. H. Atkinson; vice-president, Messrs F. Pirani and H. Tolley; committee, Messrs Goodbehere, Coble, Spence, Fitzherbert, Richmond, Aylmer, J. W. Bramwell, and Bartholomew; auditor, Mr. D. Haswell; secretary, Mr. S” W. Fitzherbert. A holiday committee was set up to arrange with business people lor concerted action regarding all holidays, except those fixed by statute. It was decided to again approach the Railway Department to grant the facility of an extra through train to Wellington and back again at night, A deputation from the Kimbolton Railway League succeeded in getting the Chamber to grant support for an agitation for extension of the railway to Kimbolton district from Feilding. WELLINGTON, yesterday. Mr. Lyman L. Pierce, national secretary of the Y.M.C.A., and Mr. W. Gillanders, his associate, wore entertained at a citizens’ banquet m Wellington last night. It was decided to inaugurate at once a seven days campaign to raise £ ‘ O(H) for the piiiposo of opening free of debt the buildings now being, erected tor the association in Wellington. Mrs. M. A. Joseph Taylor, tho owner, had no insurance.. The tenants’ amounts aio not ascertainable. The fire started in tho empty building.
