Sotuo. timo ago one James Lucas applied to the Wellington Boxing Association for permission to hold a “boxing exhibition” at Hastings. After giving consideration to the application, the association recommended the inspector of police to grant- a permit. Later on, however, the samo man applied to hold a. “boxing contest” in connection with a variety entertainment, but the association declined to recommend the granting of a permit for this, being averse to the promotion of boxing contests by individuals for purposes of pecuniary gain. -Notwithstanding tills .action, Lucas xiersevered, and eventually lie held a boxing tournament a.t Hastings without a police permit. 'Mr. W. Coffey, secretary of the Wellington Association recently received advice from the Inspector of Police at Napier that Lucas had been brought to court, charged with a breach of the law in this respect, and fined hd. It is understood that this is the hrst ease of the kind decided in the colony.
