The Agricultural Deiiartment, through Inspector Miller, has acquired the lease of 50 acres of native land adjoining the To Puia township, as a reserve for the Department. It is at present being fenced and planted with shelter and fruit " trees, and stock will shortly be placed on it. Eventually a house will be eretced on the property for the Waiapu Stock Inspector. Although “The Dairymaids” at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne, is now in its fourth week of its career, it shows no sign of being near the end of its season. Indeed it rather .seems to be increasing in popularity and the theatre continues to bo nightly filled. The genuine fun and humor of the piece is greeted with the heartiest of laughter, while the many tittractive musical numbers meet with well-deserved approbation.

The President of the No-License Leaguo (Rev. F. W. Cliatterton) has sent the following telegram to the Hon. Captain Tucker: “No-License League passed resolution last night indignantly jnotesting against the granting of a charter to the Cosmopolitan Club as being contrary to the wishes of members of the Club, and opposed to the overwhelming voto of last local option poll, tho building not even yet erected. A promise made privately that violates tho wishes of the community cannot tie the hands of responsible men. Please use strongest influence to stop granting charter.”

The Gisborne Chess Club, whose present season is rapidly drawing to a close, met for play last night, The club is at present deciding tw r o tournaments, first-class and second-class, and further games were played last night. Entries wore good for each of the tournaments, play in which is well forward. Although the present is the first season of the club, it has been very successful, and it is hoped that wdien the club is better known its future will bo assured. Tho secretary wishes it to bo known that new members will be welcomed, and that the old members of tho club will do all they can to-teach beginners. At the Baptist Tabernacle last evening, Mr. AV. Corrie Johnston delivered an interesting lecture on “Spiritism: Is it of God or of the Devil?” The speaker argued that .it was the work of the Devil, and in support, of lii.s contention ho quoted freely from the Old Testament.' He pointed out that it was foolishness on the part of some people to doubt the possibility of communion .with spirits, as the truth and reality was shown in the Bible, by God’s expressed command against having any Healings with them. Mr. Johnston plotured Satan as an Imitator, following closely God’s actions, ever ready, to catch the unwary tripping, ,•!
