BOWLING. GISBORNE BOWLING CLUB. OPENING OF SEASON. Favored with a bright fresh afternoon, the ceremony of declaring the Gisborne Bowling Club’s green opon for the season was a pleasant and successful function. The greens and lawns were in capital order, and the flower beds, looked a picture in their spring garb. Additional color, was lent to tlie scene by a profuse display of flags and bunting, streamers surmounting the ground. Play m President v. Vice-President s match commenced at 2 o’clock, and soon an interesting contest was proceeding simultaneously on nine rinks. The President (Mr. W. He looked forward to Gisborne being worthily represented at the forthcoming Auckland tournament, and had hopes of the coveted bannel be ing brought to Poverty Bay. The President also announced that in order to make tlie season more enjoyable for the ladies, it liad been decided to hold special At Homes on the green every month; laclies would be welcomed and the days duly notified. ALLEGED ROUGH PLAY BY AUCKLANDERS.
Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 10.
At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union, held last evening, the charges of rough play levelled against the Auckland representative team while on tour in the South were further considered. Reports from the referees were read, and also from the manager, as already,.published. -In the case of AVilliams, who was ordered off the field in the Auckland-Canter-bury match, the Committee decided to suspend him until September 7, 190 S, for striking a player. This is
twelve months from the date of the match. The finding of the Committee on the general charges of rough play avas as follows : “That this Committee, after thorough investigation, and guided by the opinion of those controlling the various games throughout the tour, is of opinion that the charges of rough-play anado against the Auckland team are for the greater -part unwarranted. Tlie evidence adduced, including the reports of tlie sereval referees, point to the fact that tlie Auckland team relied almost entirely on its fast and
weighty forwards; their play being hard, and against lighter opponents, possibly conveyed the impression that such play was rough. This Committee is further of opinion that in the Canterbury and Otago match (ill each ease an Aucklander was ordered off the field), inasmuch as the reports of the respective referees stated they had to caution both sets of forwards, the comments of the Canterbury papers were uncalled for and unfair.” The investigation is conclud:d.
