The Hawke’s Bay Presbytery today nominated the Rev. Isaac Jolly, M.A., of Palmerston, to bo Moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly for 1908.
OAMARU, Oct. 10. A sitting of the Arbitration Court was held yesterday, at which fineswere imposed, ranging from £2 to £5, for breaches'of the carpenters' award. From the evidence given it appeared that the employers were not aware that they were working under an award, their efforts to ascertain this having ended in failure. The heaviest fines were for failing to indenture apprentices. Labor Day was a close holiday hero. In town there was a howling carnival, tlie occasion being the opening of the Phoenix club’s season. Between 40 and 50 bowlers came from Dunedin, and there were visitors from other clubs. The AVaitaki Mounted Rifles won the Buckley cup for the third year in succession. A chess match between the Timaru and Oamarii clubs rwa’s played here. The finished games leave the scores even, hut- several games have to go for adjudication. The weather was fine. Donald Campbell. was fined £lO and costs 7s at the Magistrate's Court this morning for having played a game of chance at the Labor Day sports. Josliie Howitlion was sentenced to three months’ hard labor for obscene language at Albury races.
