BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of tho Bo-i-ougli Council was held last evening. Present: Crs. Whim-ay, Pettie, Sawyer, Bright, Mann, Williams, Somervell, Miller, and Sheridan. In the absenco of the Mayor through indisposition, Cr. Whinray was elected to the chair. An apology ivas received from tho Mayor for nonattendance.

The Engineer reported: 1 have prepared plans and cross-sections of this road, and recommend that it should be formed and shingled to the levels shown as far as Robert street, the balance of the distance being hold over until next year. It would bo useless to form tho road without shingling it, as tho surface is all sand which would be. quickly blown away by tho strong westerly, winds. There are 22 good houses in the street, and it certainly does, require properly forming and The approximate cost would be £225.” Cr. Sheridan considered there were many roads which required attention first. The owners expected the Council to make a valuable property for them. The work was not warranted with so much to do in other parts of the Borough. Tho Chairman said it would be unwise to form the road unless the shingling was proceeded with. As tho Enginer stated, the sand .would simply shift about unchecked. The Council decided to take no action in the matter, tho report to lie on the table for reference. Mr. J. Hay thanked tho Council for his appointment as turncock, and gave an assurance that he would endeavor to give every satisfaction in the discharge of his duties. Mr. Hay’s letter continued:. “As you aro aware I require men that are thoroughly acquainted with the work. I would require to employ suitable men. No doubt you are aware that the top line will need constant attention by a reliablo man capable of repairing a leak at once when necessary. I shall also require an assistant in town, one that has a good knowledge of tho work can be obtained now. Seeing that I have to break up my home I shall ask a 1 twelve months’ engagement. With reference to plant I shall requiro a 1 workshop for making services, a full | set of plumbers’ tools, set of iron ; pipe tools, boring tools, swivel nozzle [ for street watering, set of burning tools, and set of tools for top line. . Depots will also bo necessary along tlio lino for storing material ” , Cr. Sawyer: Two assistants are

wanted then? Or. Somervell: I thought, toon wliat was said before, that a £5 week man would do the lot. Cr. Sawyer: Not a £5 man; a £ 10s man might. (Laughter.) Cr. Williams: That’s what some c us said all along. Further information being aske for, the letter was referred to tl I Engineer and Public Works Commi too for report.
