SPORTS AND PASTIMES.
CRICKET. Tho annual mooting of Common, Shelton and Co.’s cricket team was hold last night. A very satisfactory balance-shoot was prosonted and adopted. Tho following officers wore elected: President, Mr. J. B. Kells; vice-presidents, Messrs F. J. Teat, G. K. Pasloy, L. O. Ingram, P. Mortonsen, and J J. Fry.; lion, soorotary, Mr. J. Cramp; treasurer, Mr. I. G. Grinlinton; delegates to Association, ‘Messrs J. Uridgo and Grinlinton. It was decided to play a practice match with the Union club on Thursday. After this match a captain will bo elected. Mr. L. O. Ingram notified that lie would donate a bat to bo awarded to the player obtaining tho best average. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho donors of last season’s trophies. A general meeting of orickoters, adjourned from last Thursday evening, was held in tho British Empire Hotel last evening. There was a good attendance, übout thirty cricketers being present. Tho principal business of tho meeting was the question of levying a ground fee for tho upkoep of the wicket at Victoria Domain, and after general discussion Mr. H. E. Maud© proposed that a fee of Is per man per day bb levied in each match played under the jurisdiction of the Association. Mr Emanuel proposed as an amendment that Is per man per match bo charged. On a show of hands being taken Mr. Maude’s motion was carried by- a good majority. On the motion of Dr. Collins it was decided that tho ground fee be charged from date.
ROWING. At ai meeting last night of tiho committee of the Gisborne Rowing Club it was decided to purchase two new up-to-date practice clinkers from Mr. James Edwards, the well-known Melbourne builder. Entries of about eight crews for tiho Trial Fours, to be rowed early in November for Mr. C. Buscke’s gold medals, were received, and from the names handed in it is expected that a good- race will, result. It was reported that tile working bee had nut tilings in a forward state, tho practice clinkers being in order to last until tho new boats are received. The secretary reported having written to tiho Harbor Board asking that some dredging be dion© in front of the boat-house and near the Roehuck-road bridge, to aliow racing to be continued on the old course. Subterranean is now favorite for the Melbourne Cup, and is also in strong demand for tho Caulfield Cup. Solution is reported amiss.
MELBOURNE BETTING. (Received Oct-. 7, 8.43 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 7. There is little or no betting over forthcoming race meetings owing to the absence of bookmakers at the A.J.C. meeting. Nominal quotations for the Caulfield Cup are: 5 to 1 Poseidon, 7 to 1 Subterranean, 12 to 1 Yabba Yabba, 14 to 1 Bendigo and Ebullition. Consequent on their running jn Sydney Mooltian and Mountain King have come into favor for the Melbourne Cup, Mooltan’s Metropolitan win causing him to be installed favorite at 8 to 1, while Mountain King is quoted at 20 to 1 and Subterranean 12 to 1.
SYDNEY RACAING (Received Oct. 7, 6 33 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 7. •During the morning rain fell at intervals. There was another large attendance. Results: — Shorts Handicap.—Mimer 1, Coolah 2, Virtue 3. Seventeen started. Betting: 12 to 1 Mimer. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 142 sec. New Stakes. —Mountain King 1, Sivoria 2, Count Witte 3. Also ran: Seddon, Block Mark. Bluo Book, Welcome Trist, and Vaporize. Betting: 2 to 1 on Mountain King. Count Witto led to the straight, where the favorito came away, and won easily. Time, lmin 54Jsoc. Metropolitan Handicap.—Mooltan 1, Apologue 2, Melodrama 3. All the acceptors but lolairo,' Delaware, Barren joey, Legation, and Trcgeare started. Betting: sto 4 against Mooltan, 4 to 1 Apologue, 25 to 1 Maranui. After the field settled down Mary of Argylo rushed to the front and had as her closest attendants Collarit, Buddha, Apologue, Florance, Melodrama, and Mooltan. There was little change in the relative positions until approaching the straight, when Collarit ran up to the leader, who led into the straight. Once heads were turned for homo the favorite, with Apologue, drew out and fought out a desperate finish, tho former winning by a short head. Maranui was sixth. Time, 2min 34J sec. . . Steeplechase.—Phaotonitis 1, Eclair 2, Haydn 3. Nine started. Betting: 2 to 1 Phaetonitis, 6 to 1 Haydn and Eclair. The New Zealanders had the race to themselves, clearing right away from the field. On the final run down the hill Eclair had a long lead, and it looked as though the top-weight would never get on terms, but on tho flat Phaetonitis came with a wet sail and won by four lengths, six lengths .between second and third. Time, smin 33sec. The race is considered to be the finest seen on the course. All tho New Zealanders jumped splendidly. Breeders’ Plate.—Bawbee 1, Arni- • let 2, Borodino 3. Fourteen started. • Beting: 3 to 1 Borodino, 4to 1 Arm- : let, 6to 1 Bawbee. Armlet got well away, but gave place to Maltose, but at the three-furlong post she again took up the running with Ale and Borodino next, and entered the straight two lengths to the good. Borodino challenged, and the pair were struggling for supremacy when Bawbee came with a rattle and won by half a length, Borodino a head away. Time, lmin 3sec. Squatters’ Handicap.—Antonio 1, Barrenjoey 2, Luciana 3. Thirteen started. Betting: 6 to 4 Antonio. Won by four lengths. Time, 2min 6Jseo.
