AUCKLAND, yesterday. The new bathing house erected hero by tho Government was opened on Saturday by Mr.- Vigor Brown, Mayor of Na-pier, in the presence of a number of visitors. The springs hero have been used for many years by a limited number of visitors, but their fame, especially as a curative agent in rheumatism and sciatica, having spread, the Government have been compelled to provide more adequate accommodation. Replying to a deputation from Qtkgo,' tho Premier said the Government intended to actively prosecute irrigation' in Central Otago. Having arrived at this determination, the Government- could not allow the waters of tho Roaring Meg river to be taken in hind by private enterprise. Delays beyond the Government’s control had taken place, but the locking up of the rivers was not going to continue. “We will not,” added Sir Joseph, “allow the present state of inaction to continue.” MASTERTON, yesterday.
Extensive repairs are being carried ; out to tlio railway bridges on tho Well! ngton-Woiodrville section. A gang of workmen recently completed seven months’ work on tho Waipoua bridge, screwing up rods and renewing parts necessary. Tho Fernside bridge is now receiving attention. A new approach is being added a.t the south end. Considerable difficulty is experienced in connection with tho latter undertaking, owing to the existence of enormous boulders in the locality. It is anticipated that the repairing of the various Maurceville bridges will occupy over two years. A large amount of pile-driving is to bo- done.

HOKITIKA, -yesterday. ■At an inquest on the man Johnston , -drowned from a dredge near Roes on Saturday, a verdict of accidentally drowned was returned._ A rider was added that a. regulation should be enforced, that all dredges should have printed rules and diagrams as to resuscitation of tlhe apparently drowned. Deceased’s body was quickly recovered, but the attempt at resuscitation failed. iMr. Henry B. Staines, a very old resident of Kanieri district, died yesterday, the victim of influenza. CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. _ 'A statement was published this morning to the effect that tlie arbitrator, Mr. Day, S.M., to whom was referred the dispute between the Commissioners of the Exhibition and William Miins'on, regarding the comditions under which Minson undertook to provide accommodation at the exhibition for school had given a decision in favour of Minson on all points in dispute and awarded costs in accordance with the Supreme Count scale. This _ statement is incorrect. The decision will not be given for some days. Hastily arousing the family, he rang u . p tdlephone exchange, but 3o minutes elapsed before the brigade bad the hose on. The occupants hud a oarrow escape, and were on the lawn bootless and scantily dad. The valuable, silver and furniture were destroved, only the surgical instruments being saved.
