RECORD SUBMARINE SPEED
United Press Association —Copyright BERLIN, Oct, 4. The first German submarine to be fitted with two petroleum motors travelled 700 miles without reserve fuel, and surpassed all distance records.

NEW WARSHIPS BUILDING
(Received Oct. 6, 5.4 p.m.) BERLIN, Oct. 5.
It is reported that the Government propose increasing the silver currency to the extent' of fifteen millions sterling. It is also reported that Germany completely recasts plans of fortifications in Alsace-Lorraine owing to the present plans having been sold to France.
As the Government yards are overworked, Germany Las distributed in private yards orders for the new warships for which expenditure was authorised last session aggregating 71 millions sterling. Tlie Socialists are organising a three months’ campaign for raising a fighting fund. The newspapers direct attention to the great increase in prices in household foodstuffs, and predict privations in the winter.

The “Standard’s” Berlin correspondent reports that the Essen and Krupp works are discharging 3000 workmen owing to decreased orders.
