COAL COMBINE.

THE TRUST DEFENDED

COAL GIVEN AWAY IN THE PAST

United Press Association—Copyright

SYDNEY, Oct. 4. A gentleman prominently connected with tho coal industry, in a letter to the press, characterises tho statements regarding tho coal vend as reckless and without foundation. Ho declares that for the last ten years the proprietors havo been practically giving away thoir coal at prices which in most cases involved a loss, and so far from acting in any tyrannical way in raising prices they are only taking a step which is just to themselves and will admit of trading operations showing a modorato return. Ho claims that tho proprietors aro perfectly right to appoint their own shipping agents for handling coal.
