Tho Trades and Labor Coiituil carried a resolution drawing tho attention of the Minister of Railways to tho fact that “ragging” was prevalent in Auckland, -and asking him to take action iin the matter. Mr. Peek stated he know of instances in which young men entering tho engine sheds were so badly treated that they woro obliged to leave tho service. In one ease a young man ivas stripped and smeared with oil. Air. Rossor said ho knew of a case in tho carpentary trade in which a boy was stripped and covored with glue. Tlio Auckland 'branch of the International Beaco (Society .passed a resolution emphatically protesting against the militia in .New Zealand being called out, as New Zealand is at peaco and harmony with every nation on the face of tlio earth. Though tlio report had been denied, it avas thought advisable to pass tho resolution in view of persistent- agitation for compulsory military traiuing.

In tho divorce Court, in the ease of Charles Edmund Gibson v. An automobile club, ito ibe known as the Taranaki Automobilo Association, was formed hero to-day. WELI.-INGTON, yesterday. The Government -have appointed Air. E. B. Turner, of Christchurch, •as inspector of scenic and historic reserves. He will commence Ills duties on the .reserves in tlio South Island, afterwards turning his attention to the North.
Cabinet yesterday made several appointments in tlio Labor Department, tlie changes being rendered necessary by .the death of Mr James Alackay. Air. J. Lomas was appointed Chief Inspector of factories, deputy registrar of industrial unions, and chief advisory officer under tho Workers’ Dwelling Act; Air. F. Rowley, .assistant, was appointed deputy chief inspector of factories; Air. J. Collins, accountant; Air. C. Aldridge, inspector of factories for AVellington, vice Air. Lindsay, transferred to Auckland; and Air. LeCreu, of Auckland, was appointed inspector of awards ill Wellington. A letter lias been received in Wellington from Dr Emanuel Lasker chess champion, stating .that either at the end of 1908 or 1909 lie intends making a tour through- the chess world, extending to New Zealand and Australia, and asking whether New Zealanders would welcome him and arrange a programme of work.
In addition to lectures and ‘practical work, Dr. Lasker would be willing to give tlio public, .instruction, for instance in schools. The letter has been passed on to tlie 'Chess Association for the necessary action.
iBLEN'H-EIAI, yesterday. ■At a meeting of the Lower Wairau River Board last night the Chairman again asked the reporters .to withdraw, which they had refused to do at last meeting when- the Board went into .Committee to consider a certain matter, the nature of which was never indicated. One reporter again declined to retire, whereupon the Chairman read opinions -from Air. Guinness, Speaker of the House, and Air. Bristed, editor of (the Weekly Press, which 'held that reporters must retire upon Boards going into eominittco if requested to do so. The Express reporter still refused to leave, whereupon it was resolved .tlrait ■the matter Ibo dealt with by a committee, and the Board rose. A school boy, son of iMr. H. F. Hall, narrowly escaped -death by drowning yesterday .afternoon. It is supposed the boy was climbing along the Omaha bridge, near the school, when lie fell .into deep water in midstream. A lad named Sheridan who was -passing saw an object in tlie water, and finding it to be -the body of a -boy, plunged in and rescued him. The boy had been under (twice. He has'now fully recovered. It -is officially -announced that .tele-
phone communication has now been, opened between the French Pass and Nelson with a number -of offices and ..bureaux between Nelson, AA'akapuaka, Croixelles and the Pass. Vessels can now communicate .arrivals and departures .as at other places. This is a successful termination of .a long Nelson .agitation. INVERCARGILL, yesterday.
At tlie Arbitration Court a number of breaches of award were -dealt with. John and Alargaret Andrews, bakers, were fined £2 for not paying overtime, AVilliam Pope, baker, for employing .a foreman and secondhand at less than (the minimum wages, was fined £1 in each case. Geo. Alackie, saiwmiller, Stewart Island, was fined £lO, covering two charges of laying less' than .the .minimum wage, .aiid £5 covering several charges of not paying wages before the Bth of the month. Carl Bounia&b was fined £5 for employing two apprentices and no journeywomau. In the Arbitration Court to-day in tlie caso of the Otago and Southland Gold AlinOrs’ Institute against the Aluddv Creek Dredging Company, an application for enforcements of award for not .allowing shifts -to go round, defendants were fined £2 and costs. CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. Mi'. William Hickory' Guudry, a well-known accountant -and an old Christchurch resident, died this morning from pneumonia, after .three days’ -illness. An elderly man named Alexander Borthwick, ’of Congalton, died suddenly this morning -in Broadway s where 'lie had been employed-. He had been employed at work from 0 o’clock,/ (Shortly after 8 lie fell dead. The cause of death was heart disease, Deceased was married, living apart from Ills .wife.
DUNEDIN, yesterday. All anti-gambling demonstration was held .in First Church last night under the auspices of the Dunedin and District Christian Endeavor Union. The speakers were the Re,v. C. Bovall, president of the C.E.

ing resolution was carried unanim-

\YESTPORT, yesterday. The AVestpont Coal Company’s new collier steamer Regains lias arrived from Newcastle-on-T’yne, after a protracted voyage, due to the breakdown of machinery. About two minutes before the accident happened, -witness heard deceased say, “Hero’s somo .more of it coming down,” and immediately afterwards there was a .bump as (the roof fell.
