HIS AGREEMENT WITH THE CONCERNMENT.

A cujiy of the agreement between Mr. Shannon, the Customs Expert, and the Government was laid on tho table to-day by the Premier. The agreement, which is dated October 20th, 1888, roads as follows: “Tho Government, having considered the several applications for the position of mercantile expert in connection with this department, I have tho honor to inform you that they have decided to make the following arrangement with you, viz., it being understood that you are to give your whole time and energies in the protection of the revenue from fraud, etc You will be allowed pay at tho rate of £BOO from the Ist of November next until the 30th June, 1899, together with travelling allowance at the rate of thirty shillings a day whilst travelling on public service, including your stay at AVellington, and you will receive one-fourth, share oi all net proceeds of seizures and penalties recovered directly through your action. It is understood further that you will be subordinate to only the Commissioner and Secretary. From the latter you will receive your instructions. AVhen required the Government undertake to place upon the Estimates and uso their best endeavors to carry through Parliament _a vote each year for three years ill order to give effect to the terms of the arrangement made with yon. The agreement is signed by the late Mr. Geo. Fisher as Commissioner of Trade and Customs. On tho motion of the Premier the document was referred to the Industries and Commerce Committee.
