IQUOR AND LABOR. That Liquor throttlos Labor is proved by tho following facts: 1. In England, out of every £101) divided botwoon master and men by the railway companies, ironworks, and boot factories, £l7 goes to tho masters and £B3 to tho men ill aingos. In t-lio Liquor manufactories it is just tho roverso —£83 going to tho omployors and only £l7 to tbo workmen. Thus legitimate trades are about live times as good for Labor as tho Liquor business. . . , 2. In tho Blue Books issued by tho English Board of Trade, the percentage of wuges to receipts is shown in tho following occupations-Coal-mining, 55 per cent.; docks and liaibors, 3d; shipbuilding, 33; engineerin'' 31; railways, 30; cotton manufactures, 27; agriculture, 27; and BREWING AND DISTILLING, only 4J per cont. Tho statistics of tho National Labor Bureau of Washington toll tho samo doleful tale re garding the United States of America In our own colony wo also find that LIQUORDOM IS THE GREAIESI ENEMY TO LABOR. According to tho N.Z. Year Book tho percentages of wages to value of products for various industries work out as follows:—Brick, tilo, and pottery works, 52 per cent.; ilax mills, 501; sawmills, sasli and door factories, 40}; agricultural implement factories, 39; coackbuildiug, otc., 381; furniture and cabinotmaking, 371; boots and shoes, 361; engineering works, 35; iron and brass foundries, 32; clothing factories, 301; and BREWERIES and MALTHOUSES, only 15 per cont. . 3. If we look at tho raw material, wo shall find furtlior striking confirmation of tho fact that, m comparison with other manufactures, pructlC THE LIQUOR TRADE GIVES NO LABOR. Tako an illustration —Iron ore. Out jf 100 tons of this material every iinglo ounco lias to have labor expended upon it, as it goes through ill the varied processes necessary for Jio iron fuctory. Now, take the iase of beor: At least-87 per cent, of i is water, upon which praotically no abor has to be expended. Thus, ivhilst out of 100 tons of iron ore 3very ounco demands the expenditure >f labor, only 13 -ions of beer needs he assistance of labor. Illustrations :o the samo effect could easily be multiplied. Hero we have an ugly ‘act, universal in its operation, viz., ha.t money spent in liquor swells the irofits of the manufacturer at the ■xpenso of discouraging tho employnent of labor. All the world over LHE LIQUOR TRADE IS A HUGE FUNNEL, laving a large capacity for receiving, nit a small one for giving out. Here s the great enemy to Labor, attackng it from two special quarters: 1) It absorbs tho hard earnings. of abor given by legitimate industries; md (2) it practically refuses to eniiloy labor in its production.
