Lord George Hamilton in a letter to the “Times” says colonial preference, however well intentdoned, was really unable to popularise or strengthen the consolidation of the Empire while its operations were regulated by a spirit of unbending protection. There was not a particle of evidence to: show that the tariff was prompted by vindictiveness, or that the duties were higher than the Commonwealth Government considers necessary adequately to protect Australian products and secure revenue.
