FOOTBALL.
AUCKLAND (11) v. POVERTY • BAT (3). Tho ' repf eseiitafivol TootUall nuiileh botwooii Auckland aiitl Poverty Bay ■ took place at Victoria Domain yesterday morning before a largo, num r bur of spectators. The day was beautifully true, being a little too warm ror football. The teams took the Held as follows : * Auckland: —Pull-back, Aliller; threequarters, Dillaaiiore, .Murray, Wilson ; live-eighths, Stuckey, Magee (.captain); half, Parraht; wing, Hull; forwards, Herring, Hooper, Poplo, Maguire, McCormick, Kinder, Williams. Poverty Bay.—Full-back, AY. Sharp ; three-quarter's, C. Hylands, G. ltowe (captain), To Hoinga; five-eighths, ill Kelly,' Kaipara; half, AYi Friday ; wing, J. Somervell; forwards, J. Nicolas; H."E. Bright, Alutu Kapa, Parker Turei, Lyons," Pine, Lowe. Tlio visitors won’ the spin ol' the coin, and eleoted to defend the town gout. This gave the home team the advantage of a slight breeze, rvliich was blowing diagonally across the held. . rM utu set the ball in morion, and Murray returned. Howe secured, and making a good run centred the ball, Stuckey kicking out. The Auckland vanguard, with the ball at their toes, invaded the homo team’s territory, AVi Friday stopping neatly by falling on the ball.' Nicolas and Lowe broke away from a lino-out, and Lyons snapping tlio leather up, made, a strong run, losing' the biill as he neared the line. _ Magee cleared his line with a judicious kick [to touch. From a scrum, Tarrant, the visitors’ half, secured, and shot the leather, out to Magee, who transferred to Murray, hut Hyland tuckle'd the centre, spoiling his take. The home forwards, headed by Bright and Lowe, came down the Held at a great pace, Wilson saving by going into touoh. AVi Friday secured from a loose ..scrum and. passed to Kelly, who sent the ball on to Rowe, who in turn transferred to To Heiinga, the latter punting high. Rowe and To lteinga followed up smartly, and carried the ball out of touch at the corner. . The pressure was relieved uy a ' forward rush. The visitors were' penalised twice in succession for putting tlio ball unfairly into tlie scrum and for. obstruction, the kick gaining a:lo£ of ground for the homo team. Kelly secured in mid-field, and making a fine oponing transferred to Rowe, who found the lino at the visitors’ 25. At this stago of the game the Aucklanders were confining the play chiefly among their forwards, trusting to the'superior weight of their pack breaking down tko local team's defence. The home team were holding their own in the scrum in the opening stages, and were getting the ball as often as their opponents. On the line-out the'vasitois had the best of the deal, and were breaking ' away repeatedly. Williams aiid McCormick oaijie through from a lihe-out, and dribbled well up the field, where Kowo relieved the pressure by finding the line. The Auckland vanguard were not to be denied, and headed by' McGuire and Hooper they' brought the ball back .again 1 : Soikie hard play ensued on the home line, and from a five-yards scrum the visitors heeled the leather out to Tarrant, who gave Magee a quick pass, and the latter, evading the opposing bucks, grounded the ball behind the chalk-lmo. Magee took the kick himself, and made a line attempt, tlio ball going outside the post. 3—o. Murray secured from the kick-out, and returned to Kaipara, who made a fine dodging run and passed to Lowe, who sent the oval on to Nicolas, who passed wildly, the ball going out. The Auckland forwards, with Hall at their head, raced the hall into Gisborne’s territorv, where Te Keinga cleverly saved by marking off their toes. From a loose scrum the bull went out to Afasree, who gave Murray a neat pass. Murray made a brilliant run, and gave the ball to AV.ilson at the opportune moment, and' tlio .speedy wing had no trouble in crossing tlio line. Magee had another attempt at goal, and succeeded in. adding the major points. B—o. The kick-off was returned to Hylands, who made a fine dash up the line, being pushed iii-to touoh. Pino and Lowe broke away from the line-out, and rushed tlie ball across the visitors’ line, where Pine fell on it, scoring a wellearned try. The attempt at goal, which was entrusted to Mutu, proved fruitless. 3—B. The reds infused a great deal of das'll into their pltiy at this point of the game, and the vanguard, led by Parker Turei, Lowe, aiid Lyons, carried play on to Auckland’s line, where Lowe dashed across and grounded the lull, but the wbistje had sounded for an infringement, aiid the hall was taken back again. Tlie visitors broke away with a passing rush, in which nearly all the team took a hand, and carried play on to .the home line, where the whistle sounded half-time.
Upon resinning it was noticed that the breeze had freshened considerably and was in Auckland’s fuvor. Hall kicked off, and Rowe returned to centre. For off-side play in midfield Auckland- was awarded a free kick, and Hall had a shot from a few .Mirds of his 1 own side'of the halfwav line. He made a fiuo attempt, the ball falling short. A fine foot rii,sh by the homo forwards took play to the other end of fcho field, where a scrum was formed. Wi Friday secured from tho scrum, anil shot the lather out to Kelly who gave llyland a quick pass which the latter failed to hold, spoiling a likely chaneo to score. * In stopping a forward rush by tho visitors, Wi Friday received a nasty knock which mcaorodated him for a few minutes. A fine pa s ing rush by the visitor’s backs was 1 ■ nstrated by Te Reinga wlio tackled in great fashion. Kinder secured in front of the home goal and bad a pot, but the ball refused to rise. Fine and Somervell initiated a fino dribbling rush, which carried the ball out in Auckland’s quarters. From the lineout Hall secured, and making a fine run kicked out well, up the line. The Aucklanders w r ero attacking with great spirit and the local men were kept busy defending their base. From a scrum Farrant gave the ball to Magee, who transferred to Murray, and- the latter making a brilliant run scored in a good position. Magee failed with the kick at goal. 11—3. Shortly afterwards tho Auckland forwards charged down on tho home line, and Kinder snapping up tho leather passed to Herring who sent tho ball on to Hooper, who crossed the line and scored. Magee again failed with the kick at. goal. 14—3. . For the victors Mageo (fivo-eigliths) played a brilliant game, his passing being of a high order of merit. Murray (centre) and Wilson (wing-three-
quarter) also piayod well. Hall (wing -forward). AViiliunis and McGuire wore conspicuous, in .tlie lorwai'd division.
