HOCKEY.

HAWKE’S BAY BEATS POVERTY BAY. Press Association. NAPIER, September 0. The Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay hockey teams played their return match at Hastings to-day. The visitors played a good hard game, and at. the commencement of the first spoil had rather tho best of tho play, but their shooting was not very good. Towards tho end of tho first spell the combination of the Hawke’s Bay forwards improved greatly and at half time they had scored two goals while Poverty Bay had failed to find the net on any occasion. In the .second spell Hawke’s Bay started off well and soon placed a third goal to their credit. After this Poverty Bay woke up and made strenuous efforts to score, but without avail, the Hawke’s Bay defence being sound. The local team wore undoubtedly superior in tho combination of their forwards, but in tho back division both teams wore evenly matched. Hodges (1) and Dalgleish (2) were the scorers for tho local team, and these two with IVelham, Hallett, Shattky and Pirie all played well, while Roderick, Pirie, Dines and Grant wore the most, prominent of tho visitors.
