N O-LICENSE IN GILL. INVERCAHMORE BUSINESS. LESS CRIME. That No-Liconso ill Invercargill spoils commercial prosperity is evidenced by tho Press telegrams in our daily papers. 1. Tho Invercargill Customs returns showed tlmt tho twelve months ending March 31st last constituted a “RECORD YEAR” from a business point of view. “On all goods (exclusive of liquor) the duties collected were over L6OOO in excess of the previous year.” 2. For tho same period th© Government valuations increased, and the number of buildings erected “compared very favorably with the previous yenr’s operations.” In this connection, another telegram stated that "the building trade in Invercargill is extremely busv, both in town and suburbs. fn addition to large business premises, more residences are under construction than ever before.” . But* not only has No-T.ieenso increased tho eommerei'il prosperity of Invercargill, but it lias practically ABOLISHED SERIOUS CRIME. From tbe last four consecutivo Supreme Court Sessions in Invercargill we have remarkably conclusive testimony on this point. 1. On Dee. -litli last, “Mr. Justice Denniston congratulated the district oil tile absence of serious crime.” 2. On M:ii'ch sth last, “Mr. Justice Williams congratulated thoGrund Jury on tbe fact that there were only two criminal.cases, neither of them serious.- His Honor commented favorably oil the fact that tiler© was s" little crime in such a largo district. 3. Three months later, at the same place, “Mr. Justice Chapman said he was very pleased to congratulate the Grand jury on the absence of crime from this large and growing district. Tho calender was an exceedingly small one, and, IN COMPARISON WITH FORMER TIMES, SHOWED A MARKED DIMINUTION. In proportion to population, it was comparatively insignificant.” 4. bast month Mr. Justice Williams' said: “It is a subject for congratulation that the calender is so light. There had been practically a total absence of crime in tlio district during tho last three months.” This ovorwhelmingly conclusive evidence of tho commercial and moral success of No-Licenso in Invercargill needs no comment.
