THE SIEV WRIGHT MEMORIAL

[Tj the Editor.] Sir, —I do not think that I ever road a 'more miserable and ungenerous lottor than that of “Civis” in this morning’s papor. It makes ono think that oven tlio liberty of tho press may sometimes be’ dearly paid for. Mrs. Sievwright was a lady whose

best efforts were always spent ior the benefit of humanity without distinction of creed; one whom we all highly respected and whose best monument, after ally exists in tho hearts of those who knew her. I hesitated taking any notice of “Civis’s” letter as tending to give a prominoncc to wliat merely deserves contomxit, hut sometimes silence is misinterpreted. —Yours, etc., J. TOAVNLEY. Gisborne, Sopt. 6. [To the Editor.] Sir, —I feel called upon to protest against tho publishing’iof ail offensive letter, such as that signed by “Civis” in this morning’s issue undoubtedly is. I would jirotest against the publishing of such a letter under any circumstances, but much more so when the writer lias not the courage to sign his name. I' feel sure such a letter (if read) must bo offensive to hundreds in this town who were admirers of the late Airs. Sievwright’s work and character. The monument is erocted to commemorate that work and as a token of respect to that character, her religious views having nothing whatever to do with it. —Yours, etc., J A ALES ALLEN. Gisborne, Sept. 6. [To the Editor.] Sir, —AAlio is “Civis”? If ho will sign his name and not hide his light under a bushel I will reply to him. JOHN AY. AIACKRELL.
