FATAL FALL DOWN A STAIRWAY
COUGHING FIT HELD TO BE THE CAUSE. Press Association. DUNEDIN. September 6. An inquest 'was held to-day into tile circumstances surrounding tho death of the Ilian Thomas Murray, who ilhsl in the hospital on Thursday m-u-niu- as the result of injuries received by falling down tho well of a stairway in the Gladstone Hotel la-te 911 Wednesday night. The evidence showed that deceased was perfectly sober. He was a man of an extremely sober nature, but was subject to r:vking fits of coughing, which rendered him quite helpless at their bright. Deceased was seen to proceed up the stairs to his bedroom on the top flat of the building, hut no one saw where lie fell from or how ho c«nne to fall. It is presumed that he had an attack of coughing on reaching tlio top of tlio stairway, and leaned over the balustrade for support, and over-exertion in ascending the steps, together with tho coughing, caused a fainting fit, and he fell over the I,ilustrafh* to the bottom floor. A verdict of death from concussion of the brain, the result of an accidental fall from a stairway, was returned. -
