Press Association. TIMARU, Sept. 5. At the Arbitration Court yesterday, cases against the Smithfichl 'and Pavcora slaughtermen for striking in February last were dealt with. Twentytwo Smithfield men out of 42 cited were fined £5 each. The rest ‘had not been served or woro not actually concerned in the strike. Most of the 40 Pareora butchers were stated to have loft- for Australia before tho proceedings woro instituted. A few were excused as not boing concerned in the striko, and of tho rest only six had been served with tho summons by registered letter, and these wore fined £5 each. The fines were made payable to the Inspector of Factories. Mr. White, Crown Prosecutor, appeared for the inspector and Mr. S. G. Raymond for some of those who had affirmative defences and wero accused. Some minor cases were dealt with, and the cases of the country printing offices of Canterbury were part heard. This will be concluded to-day, and a compensation case;will then be heard.
At a meeting of thirty anglers it was unanimously resolved that tho new Government regulations restricting the day’s take of trout is unsuitable to South Canterbury and recommending tlio Acclimatisation Society to framo a local regulation to override tho clause. DUNEDIN, Sept. 5.
The sum of £602 was collected yostorday on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. building fund, bringing tlio total donations up to £8269 lls 4d. WANGANUI, Sopt. .5. Tbo annual meeting of tho Wanganui Frcozing Company was held today. The annual report showed a successful year. Tlio balance of profit and loss, including £4036 carried forward from last year, was £ 10,9-17. The directors recommend a dividend of 8 per cent., tho necessary provision for depreciation, tho placing of £IOOO to reserve fund, and tho carrying forward of the balance. The report was adopted. Mossrs. Hall and Morton wore eloctod directors. The company intend to enlarge the work'’ capacity 300 sheep per day. WELLINGTON, Sept. 5. At the Magistrate’s Court Robert Humphries, sixty years of age, was committed for trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a child at Wellington. Annie Whittaker and William Bond,
charged with using an instrument to procure abortion, wero remanded for a week, tlie girl on whom the instrument' is alleged to have been used being so ill that Mr. Wilford, who appeared for accused, refused to crossexamine her. Rifleman W. Ballinger, who was selected as one of the Australian rifle team, is unable to make the trip, and Color-Sergeant Hadfield, of Blenheim, has been selcted to tako his place. Cajitain Foster, of Lyttelton Navals, will take charge of tho team. The Queensland and New South Wales boxing representatives who are to compete in the Australasian championship tournament next week, were officially welcomed by the Wellington Boxing Association to-day. '
