SOMETHING STRANGE.
[To the Editor.]
Sir, —Does it not seem strange to see our Mayor laying the foundation of a memorial to tho memory of a person wlio was a Freethinker and Spiritualist, and ali_ in the midst of a Christian-professing community, assisted by the authority ,of the Gisborne Borough Council, , and in one of the principal thoroughfares of our town, which is • moro conspicuous to the gaze of all passers-by. Now, sir, this spot niisSh* be profitably utilised by some public necessity, such as a “public urinal,” or-some other neces sary object, , if our City: Fathers were only energetic and progressive enough to look after the welfare of the persons who placed them in authority, or had they been as energetic as the person who persisted in this fail by going round the town asking for subscriptions and signatures for the purpose of furthering this object. Judging by tho state of our streets, the energies of our councillors are lying dormant. Where are all the promises which were made previous to tlie list election ? Sir, . there is food for reflection in tho erection of this memorial for our Christian-or dess, ig teachers, i.t being the only monument in New Zealand to the memory of aSpiritualist. —I am, etc. Qjyjg
