GISBORNE (3) v. AUCKLAND (0). At Victoria ‘Domain yesterday afternoon ' tlie Auckland ladies’ liockey team was defeated by the Gisborne ■lndies by 3 goals to nil. T.h e play of ■the local ladies was of a high order of merit, and they thoroughly deserved t»heir win. The Auckland ladies made a great effort to ward oft defeat, but the splendid concerted I day of the Gisborneitcs proved too much' for them. Tli e teams took the field as ; follows : —Auckland : Goalkeeper, E. Alison; full-flicks, N. Macindoe and M. Alison; halves, E. Mainland, M. Dawson, and K. W-’n-yard; forwards, B. Dobie, L. Goudie, C. Maris-Clurk Ccantain), H. Bagley, ■and E. Maris-Clark. Gisborne: Gonl-keejier, F. Sawyer; full-backs, H. AVoodbine-Johnson and K. Sherratt; halves, E. Matthews, Y. Sherratt, B. Goffe; forwards, L. Matthews, A. Slierratt, Ivy Goffe, ,M. AVaohstnann, and -W. Reynolds (captain). From the commeucoment the spectators, who had assembled in large numbers to witness the contest, were treated to one of the finest exhibitions of hockey yet seen on a local ground. Miss C. Maris-Clark, -the Auckland captain, had the best 'of the bully-off, heating the local centreiforward, -Mbs Ivv Goffe. The visitors carried play into the home ■team’s quarters, where Miss AVood-bine-Johnson, with ono -of her powerful drives, sent the ball well up tile field. Miss L. Matthews aiined possession, and, dribbling nicely, transferred the scene of operations to tlie visitors’ stronghold, where Miss M. Alison relieved the pressure by a fine drive to the boundary. The home forwards then set up a determined attack on the visitors’ goal, and two or three fruitless shots were made'at the net, but the coolness of the Auckland. goal-keeper. Miss E. Alison, saved the situation. From a fine, passing rush by the home team Misb
A. Do Lautour succeeded in. guiding the ball into tlie net, drawing fi'.lVit blood. Tliis reverse caused the visitors to liven up, and their forward division carried the play close to the Gisborne circle, where Miss G. Maws-. Clark, after working her way into ■the circle, had an ineffectual shot ait goal, the ball just missing the net. Misses Matthews, Goffe, anil Wachsmann by a pretty .passing rush soon had the Auckland goal menaced, but the : defensive play of the Auckland full-backs, Misses N. M'lcindoo and M. Alison, proved too sound, and play centred. Towards the close of the first spell Miss L. Matthews, from a passing rush, was instrumental in adding another goal to the Gisborne score.
During the greater part of the second spell the home team kept the visitors penned in their own quarters. and with the exception of-one goal, which was scored .by Miss 'Matthews, their inability to score sjiea'ks volumes for the defensive play of the Auckland ladies. The game was. controlled by •Mr. E. H. Pav.itt in an efficient manner, while . Messrs, H. Garrett and E. Featon held tho line flags. The visitors were entertained at afternoon t«i» at the Alexandra Tea Rooms after the match, and this evening a social is being tendered to them by the local ladies.
