There are still five lists to bo completed. Tho public works committee of the Borough Council will pay a visit of inspection to the Patutahi quarry this morning. The Engineer is engaged upon a comprehensive report dealing with the whole o nest ion of metal supply, to bo considered at next meeting of the Council. It was tho intention of his Honor Uud'ge Jones to leave this morning for Port Awamii, to commence a sitting of the Native Land Court there on Monday. However, the Arai-Mntawa.i case lias taken up more time than anticipated, and as it is important to get the matter completed this sitting, the Awamii business wilt probably have to be postponed for a few days. The Wellington.correspondent of tho Lyttelton Times says:—There aro roasons for believing that a compromise may bo effected between the “New Zealand Times” and tho “Dominion,’’the now morning paper about to bo published in Wellington. Tho “Dominion,” which has already secured a staff and plant and has a building well in hand, has been promising to commenco publication in ten or fourteen days. Tho venture was floated largely in order to opposo the Land Bill, and the directorate includes some men who have been prominent in politics on the Conservative side. Now it has become obvious that the Land Bill will be practically settled one way or the other beforo the new paper gets fairly under way. 1 hear on excellent authority this morning that if the negotiations already discussed do not fall through, tho “New Zealand Times” and tho “Dominion” will not fight ono another.
