Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 4. The Wellington Post and Telegraph Rifles fired to-day in a ten man match against the Postal teams of London, Montreal, Natal, Melbourne and Sydney. Tho local men fired in heavy rain and compiled a total of 838 at 200, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each range. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Robert Humphries, sixty years of ago, was committed for trial on ii charge of indecently assaulting a child at Wellington. . Annie AVhitta'ker and William Bond charged with using an instrument to procure abortion woro remanded for a week. Tho girl on whom tho instrument is alleged to have been used being so ill that Air. Wilford, who appeared for accused, refused to cross-examine her. At an inquest on tho body of Walter Jennings who died suddenly at Kilbirnio after apparently suffering from influenza, and who was not attended by a doctor, the medical evidence showed that death was due to kidney di case followed by peregarditis and effusion of the ploura. Dr. Tyffe said that, had a doctor been called in the kidney disease could not have been cured but tlie man’s life might have been considerably prolonged. INVERCARGILL, September 4. A t tlie inquest on Thomas Crawford. who was found dead on the beach at Riverton, medical evidence was to the effect that appearances wore consistent with the theory that deceased had had a fit just prior to deit.li. A verdict that death was due to drowning, but that there was no evidence to show that it was due to any voluntary act of deceased was returned.
