CLIVE V. GISBORNE LADIES. The return match between representatives of the Clivo and Gisborne Indies’ hockey teams was played at Victoria Domain yesterday aftornoon. There was a fair attendance, and the weather was beautifully fine. The first game between these teams on Thursday., afternoon last, it will he remembered, resulted in a win for the local representatives hj - 2 goals to nil. Yesterday/thero wore many who held the opinion that the .visitors would avenge their defeat, and this opinion was not far from h.oing a correct one. The teams took the field iis follows : —- Clivo (red, white, and hi ick). — Goal-keeper, Miss Peterson ; fullbacks, Misses H. Harrison (captain) uml Land; halves, Misses Greaves, li. Neilson. and A. 13isell; forwards, Misses D. Taylor, K. Brady, Crowley, B. Harrison, and D. Brady. Gisborne (dark blue and white). — Goal-keeper, Miss Sawyer; full-backs, Misses IC. Sherratt and AVoodbineJolinson ; halves, Misses Y. Sherratt, AV. .Reynolds (captain), and E. Matthews ; forwards. Misses L. Matthews, A. Sherratt, J. Goffe, M. AVaclisman, anti B. Goffe. Two spells of 3d minutes each were played. Air. B. J. Bright acte|d as referee, while All's. Alerritt (Clive) and Miss A'. AA'arren carried the lineflags. The opening of the game was. sensational, as immediately after the bully-off the Clive girls by fine .combined play took the hall down the field in capital style, and_ Aliss B. Harrison, centring with judgment, gave Aliss Crowley possession in front of the Gisborne goal, and that lady, dribbling judiciously, heat Aliss Sawyer with a well-directed, strong shot, and scored Clive’s first goal within a couple of minutes of the opening of tho game.. On resuming, Gisborne hotly attacked. and for a considerable spell kept tlie Clive team busily defending their base. Tlieir efforts lacked combination, however, and they were repeatedly penalised for “sticks,” .Aliss B. Goffe, who was playing over-zea-lously, being the principal offender in tilis respect. The defence of the Clive goal-keeper and full-backs was excellent, and averted several goals being registered at this stage. Clive eventually removed the danger, and took a hand at attacking. From >play in mid-field Aliss Dolly Taylor, who played capitally throughout, got away’ and after taking the ball well down the field passed nicely to ALiss Crowley, who ended a brilliant piece of play by shooting Clive’s second goal, amidst lieirty applause. From this out until haif-time was called Gisborne had the better of the play, hut were unable to break through the Clive defence.
Gisborne opened the second spell with renewed vigor, and appeared to be in better condition than the visitors, who lacked the dash they displayed in the first half. Attiok after attack was made on the Clive goal, and from one of these Aliss AVachsman shot a neat goal. The local ladies continued the pressure, Misses Afattliews. Reynolds, A. Sherratt, and AVachsman putting in capital work. At this stage a rush by the local forwards took the hall down
to the visitors’ goal, and it struck the upright of the football goal-post out, side the net. The ball rebounded in front of the net, arid was hit through, the Clive goal-keeper making no effort to stop the shot, as she rightly held the ball to be dead. The referee, who was under the impression that the hall had struck the post of the net, awarded a goal to Gisborne. This placed the scores level —2 all. From this out Gisborne continued to have the best of the play, hut they sadly lacked combination, and. compared unfavorably with their opponents in . this 'respect, though they made more powerful drives. Just before the game ended a capital piece of combined play by Alisses K. Brad.v and D. Taylor took the hall the entire length of the field, and narrowly missed winning the game for the visitors. There was no further score, and the game thus ended iri a draw —2 goals each. Competent critics hold that the result should have been 1 goal each, as they state that Aliss Crowley was off-side when she shot Clive’s second goal, while the referee admits that lie should not have awarded Gisborne’s second goal. The game was a capital one to watch, and was full of incident, and a draw about represents the calibre of the teams on the day’s play, as there "'as very, little to pick and choose between them. The Clive ladies, who speak glowingly of the hospitality they have received during their stay in Gisborne, return home by to-morrow’s boat.
AUCKLAND LADIES’ TEAM. The representative team of Auckland ladies arrives in Gisborne this afternoon. To-morrow afternoon the Auckland ladies will try conclusions with the local representatives; on Friday they will play a match against the Wanderers’ team; and on Saturdav. if a ground is available, they will pi iv a return match with the representatives. ROTORUA TRAIN ACCIDENT. PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE MISHAP. F ress Association. AUCKLAND, September 3. The inquiry concerning the Rotorua railway accident was concluded before District -Judge Kettle to-day. Mr. Prendergast, who appeared for the Department, suggested that the most probable cause of the accident was that the AVestinghou.se brake wiis not properly applied on the incline. Mr. Baunie, on behalf of tlic men, considered the most reasonable explanation was that tbe gear bad been interfered with by Maoris atNgatim, it having been stated in evidence that some Maori children had turned on one of the cocks.
