CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LEADER
Mr. Charles H. Gibbs, Committee on Publication, ' First Clmroli of Christ, Scientists, Sydney, on a letter to /the Sydney Morning Herald, condemns certain articles which have recently appeared i-ri McClure’s Magazine, and adds: —“Mrs Eddy, like all great- religious' leaders, has for 40 years been subjected to the -most personal and /malignant attacks. Her motives have been misconstrued, lier teachings have been distorted, the sanctity of her private life has ibeeii invaded by -ruthless enemies, and her name held up to scorn, because —astonishing to relate —a famous humorist -has just discovered that she did not write her own book! Yet during /all these years Mrs Eddy has gone on in lier quiet-way, asking that she shall he followed only as she herself ‘follows Christ,’ 'and by her wise leadership and pure teachings, based upon those of tlio Master himself, bringing health and peace to tens of thousands of wearied and sick people. Neither Mrs. Eddy nor those who have found spiritual and physical relief by the study of her writings are /at all disturbed by these continued slanders. Many of these slanders have become quite venerable, ar e hoary with old age, and will no doubt soon pa6S into oblivion. In the meanwhile, it is gratifying to every lover of truth and freedom of thought and liberty of conscience to know that a- .reaction has 6et in in America.”
