BOATING FATALITY AT HICK’S BAY.
A SAILOR DROWNED. The police received telephonic information on Saturday of a drowning fatality at Hick’s Bay, the, victim being an A.B. named E. Lawrence, of tlie s.s. Haupiri’s crew. It seems that the Haupiri on her down trip from Auckland put in at Hick’s Bay to land passengers and cargo. After some passengers had disembarked, the shill’s boat got into difficulties when returning to the steamer at 9 o’clock. A heavy sea struck the boat, and had the effect of causing four of the crew to lose their oars. Lawrence, in. addition, was thrown overboard by the impact, and, with only the steering oar to propel the gig, the crew were unable to pick him up in time, and only with difficulty boarded the steamer. The unfortunate.man was a poor swimmer, and quickly sank. Efforts to find the bodv were, fruitless, but Constable Mellsop, who proco«|ed overland from Port Awanui, is continuing tlie search. A second telephonic messa<re, received at 6 p.m. on Saturday, stated that the body had not been recovered up to that hour. Further word is expected to-day.
