HOCKEY.

HAWKE’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY. The representative match between Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay should attract a good attendance.. As remarked by our Napier correspondent, the Hawke’s Bay team appears to he a first-class combination, and should give a good account of themselves. The Poverty Bay team will be composed as follows:- —Goal, Martin; backs, Willock and Olsen ; halves, Pirie, Armstrong (captain), and Grant; forwards, Pino, S. Roderick, Hansen, and Hooper. Martin at goal has been playing in the position all the season and has demonstrated time and again that lie is absolutely reliable. The full-bcks are both safe men. The three halves are well 'worthy of their places. The 'forwards are all picked men, and all of them are in good condition, and they should make the game very fast. Altogether the team is a thoroughly representative one, and should provide for spectators a very close and interesting contest.

CLIVE LADIES’ TEAM. At tho Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon the Gisborne Ladies’ B team suffered a defeat at the hands of the Clive ladies, to the tune of 3 goals to nil. The' visitors played a much better game than on the preceding day, and thoroughly deserved their win. A slight change was made in tho position, of the Clive eleven, 'Misses N. Lord and It. Neilson ehaninm? places. From the start the visitors set up a determined attack on the home team’s base, playing well together. The Misses Brady (2) and 11. Harrison carried play into the Gisborne, circle, where, after a spirited contest-, Miss 1). Osborne relieved with a fine drive. The visitors brought the ball back again, and the home goal was subjected to some narrow escapes, the ball just missing tbe net on numerous occasions. The Gisborne backs, Misses Osborne, Jones, and Fromm, were kept busy staving off the attack, and for a time were successful. Towards the close of the .first spell Miss D. Taylor initiated a fine passing rush, which carried play into the borne circle and allowed MissK. Crowlev to shoot a lovely goal. No further score was recorded in. the first spell, and the_ players took a wellearned rest. Upon resuming the visitors continued to press their opponents and the Gisborne girls were hard at work defending the greater part of the time. The home team showed glimpses of brilliant play, but these were nullified by the team not following up. By fine concerted play on the part of the Clive forwards the ball was carried into the Gisborne circle, and Miss B. Harrison was instrumental in finding the net. Tho Gisborne team made a heroic effort "to ward off the defeat, but to no avail, and shortly afterwards Misg IC. Crowley notched her second goal. There was no further score, and the game ended —Clive 3 goals, Gisborne B nil. The home team made a gallant stand against their weightier and more scientific opponents, and though defeated were by no means disgraced. The game was controlled in the first half by Mr. Danvers and in the second by Mr, Olsen.

Tho return match this afternoon between tho Clive ladies and the Gisborne A team promises to be a good contest, as tho visitors have apparently- only just' struck form, ami should put up a bettor fight than an the first match. The teams will be tho same as played on Thursday. At Wliiinray’s Hall Inst night the visiting lady players avere entertained by Judge and .Mrs. Jones at a dance. About 40 couples were' present;'and a very pleasant time was spent. Mr. W. Luttrell carried out the duties <>t MIC., and the music was supplied .by Miss Moore. Songs were interspersed between the dances tluring the evening.
