Mr. F. Crespin, who has been in Gisborno for the past few days representing Messrs. H. M. Smeeton and Co., Auckland, was to leave this morning for Auckland. Adjutant Dickons, of tho Gisborno corps, will attend the Salvation Army Congress in Melbourne in November next. A number of long-service New Zealand officers aro to make the trip. The Congress, to be presided over by Commissioner McKie, will be the largest of the kind ever held in Australasia. Mr. Edward Montgomery, of Montgomery’s Entertainers, has been confined to his room since Thursday, with an attack of influenza.

The footballer, D. Porter, who had his leg broken above tho anldo in Thursday’s match, as the result of a collision, is reported to bo making favorable progress. Mr. T. Goldsmith, of Awapuni, who was injured through stepping too hurriedly off the Tuatea on Thursday night, thereby sustaining a liastv fall against the edge of the wharf, is doing well. Examination by Drl Coker showed the penalty for the mishap to bo two broken ribs, and the sufferer was conveyed to tlio Turanganui Hotel for treatment. The secretary of the Hospital Trustees received telegraphic notification yesterday that the Hon. Capt. Tucker and Dr. Valintine have appointed Dr. E. S. Brett, M. 8., Ch., 8., B. Sc., Edinburgh, as house surgeon to the Gisborne Hospital. Tho new appointee holds high credentials from medical men of eminence in Edinburgh, under whom he studied, and is stated to he especially well versed in public health matters, practical sanitation and hospital administration. . Dr. Brett came to Wellington from Loudon in 1904, having been selected by the AgentGeneral from amongst a number of applicants, for tlie position of assistant. medical officer to the New Zealand Mental Hospital. He is a man of about 30 years of age and liis work has won warm commendation. The Trustees appear to have' been fortunate in securing a doctor of such qualifications for the post. Dr. Brett will take up his duties in about, a week's time.
