Before proceedings were instituted it is stated the company offered £I,OOO to Mrs. Duncan, £I,OOO to Airs. Carson, and £3OO to the Welch children. _ WELLINGTON, August' 29. Iho City Council to-night referred to the tramways committee an offer from Air. Archibald Hall, for many years manager of the old horse trams, to lease tho whole of the Council’s electric tramways for 21 years. Air Hall offers £40,000 per annum, plus threepence per month per mile for tlie. supply of power. The arrivals in New Zealand during ho month of July, 1907, numbered 1908 and tlio departures 2119. Tho arrivals in the corresponding mouth of last year were 2353 and the departures 2452.

At a public meeting held here tonight by Captain Ale-Naught-, organiser for the National Defence League, a branch of the league was formed, with a strong local committee to further the aims and objects of the league.

The stability of tho Borough was evidenced by the confidence shown by the public in regard to the 13 £IOO debentures offered for the Borough consolidation loan, tenders for which were opened to-night. 18 , ten , ders amounting to 1 - 10 tendel ' s accepted were l )er cent - premium, £2OOO 11 J % £2500 at £1 10s, £4OO at £1 os 3d, £7200 at £1 ss. The last tender was rendered for the. wnole amount. The total premiums amounted to £259 Is. The debentures bear interest at 4$ .per cent, with 28 years’ currency.
