HOCKEY

Yesterday a team of boys from Standard VI. of the D.H.S. met the Gisborne Ladies’ B team, and won by 3 goals to 2. Misses IC. Martin ana V. Warren scored for the ladies, and Stevenson, Wi, and Catten for the boys. A team to play the Poverty Bay Hockey Representatives on Thursday afternoon will bo picked from the following: Pottie, Roderick (2), Ellison, Wi. Friday. M. Doylo, Rice, Friar, Gideon, McLachhm, Dines, Lewis. The players are requested to appear in all white. P.B. HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association was held last evening at the Royal Hotel. Mr. E. H. Pavitt occupied the chair. A letter was received from Hawke’s Bay Association definitely deciding the date of tho Interprovincial match with Poverty Bay representatives. Tho match is to be played on Saturday next. The Clive ladies’ toam play a match with the local ladies on Thursday next, and also a return match on Saturday. The Association decided to charge 6d admission on Thursday and Is for gentlemen and 6d for ladies on Saturday. Owing to the Secretary, Mr. Jas. Wilson, leaving tho district it was necessary for the Association to elect a secretary to fill tho position. On the motion of Mr. J., J. Martin seconded by Mr. O. R. Olsen, Air. Sargisson was unanimously elected to the position.

PRESENTATION TO AIR. J WILSON.

At the conclusion of tho Hockey Association meeting last night the members of tho various teams cou gregated at the Royal Hotel for the lurjpose of making a prsjj'd.vici to their departing secretary, Mr. Wilson. There was a ia’go attendance, all tho clubs being well represented. Air. E. H. Pavitt was elected to tho chair and in a few wellchosen words presented Air. Wilson with a set of pipes and a handsome pair of ebony-backed hair brushes, each bearing a silver shield on the back suitably inscribed. The chairman referred to the valuable work dono by Air. Wilson and hoped that in his new sphere of action he would still be to the fore in sporting circles. In responding Air. Wilson thanked the donors of the gifts very heartily for their kindness. Ho had always endeavored to do his duty to the Association and to his fellow-players. Mr. J. J. Alartin also spoke in eulogistic terms of the guest of tho evening, saying he was sorry that Air. Wilson was leaving them just, when the representative matches were coming on, as Air. AVilson was one of the foremost hockey players of the district and they would feel his loss keenly. He also made reference to the splendid work that the retiring secretary had done for hockey in this district, stating that the success of the past year was in a great measure due to the untiring efforts of Air. AVilson on all occasions, to further the interests of this particular branch of sport. In reply to Air. Alartin, Air. AVilson said .that he thought he was getting more than his due as there had been others besides himself hard at work in the interests of the game. He said that if the players of Poverty Bay put their whole energy into the game they should not fear any team in New Zealand. A programme of musical items was gone through and the proceedings terminated with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” AVAIRARAPA BEATS WANGANUI. Press Association. AIASTERTON, August 26.
