COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Coc/k County Council was held yesterday afternoon. In the absence of the Hon. Cuptain Tucker, Cr. H. Kenway was voted to the chair, there being also present, Crs. W. Sherratt, W. iD. S. MacDonald, F. J, Lysnar and A. F. Matthews. On the motion- of the Chairman, special orders woro confirmed lor the Pakarao and Waimata bridge loans. Cr. Kenway, who was absent from last meeting, referred to the decision to take over King’s Road from the Taruheru Road Board. He asked wliethor it included the 15 chains under the control of the Waimata Road Board. The portion from the main road to the middlo of the bridge, lie pointed out, belonged to the latter 3oard. The Clerk: I took it that the whole road belonged to the Board that had control of the main portion, and the whole road from end to end has accordingly been advertised. Cr. Lysnar questioned whether the Council could take over the portion, referred to in this, way, the Clerk 1 agreeing with him that it would be as well to get the formal assent of the Board.
Cr. Konway guaranteed that consent would be given. This piece of road had always- been a nuisance to the Board. Though he would have objected t'o King’s road being taken over by the Council had be been prosent at the time, it would be better in the circumstances to take the road over the whole length. Cr. Sherratt gave notice to move that the royalty on Patutahi stone obtained from the Borough be increased from threepence to sixpence. Cr. F. Lysnar, on behalf of Cr. White and himself, complained thatwhile at the previous regular meeting they had fixed August 23rd for the meeting, it hud been put. forward a week by the Chairman’to suit himself. Was the Chairman permitted to alter dates agreed upon, to suit his own convenience?
Cr. Ken way: 1 think not. Cr. Lysnar said they had made arrangements to attend on the 23rd, yet when he and Cr. White were away the date of the meeting was altered to the 16th, simply because two members named could not attend on the 23rd.
Cr. Kenway agreed that it would have been a proper thing to consult the other members before altering the date for the convenience of two membens.
Cr. F, Lysnar queried whether the business done at that meeeting was legal, but the acting-Chairman was not prepared to go that far. Cr. Matthews thought the absentees should not now stand on their dignity. It would have been proper to protest to the meeting in question. Cr. Lysnar: We did. Cr. White and I were in Wellington, and sent a joint protest. It was agreed to mention the matter when the Chairman (Hon. Capt. Tucker) and Cr. W. D. Lysnar return.
Plans of the now building were informally discussed.
