Five thousand Ivabyle horse-men sharply attacked French troops commanded by Col. Dnide on Sunday, from the morning until 11 o’clock, when they were repulsed. The tribesmen displayed remarkable courage, charging within 300 yards of the French infantry; also engaging the Algerian cavalry in a hand-to-hand encounter with sabres. Once they ambuscaded a jiarty of 50 Spanish soldiers, but reinforcements extricated them. The French finally outflanked the Moors, who retreated. Two Frenchmen were killed and three wounded. The Gloire from the bay effectively shelled the tribesmen, who lost 100. The Sultan is willing to guarantee life and property of foreign residents in Fez if the French troops confine their operations to the immediate neighborhood of Casablanca. Raisuli offers to withdraw from public life if France and Britain guarantee his life.
