EAST COAST LIGHTHOUSES.

(Special to Times.) AVELLINGTON, August 20. Tho need for tho better lighting of the ."East Coast of the North Island was pointed out b- Mr. Herries this afternoon. Tho Minister for "Marine agreed that it was absolute]- necessary that th e East Coast should have two or three additional lighthouses, and he was already making provision for a 15-imilo light on tho Ariel Reef, near Gisborne. There was also a need for a light at the North Cape. In fact, this was one of the most important of these necessities. He expected later on to ho able to do something in tho -matter. If they could orect a new lighthouse, say, every iavo years, they would soon get tho coast properly lighted. Mr. Herries also asked the Minister for Marine a question about tho Tuahine Point lighthouse, pointing out that £250 was voted for it last vear, but that nothing was spent. The Hon. Mr. Millar replied that the Government had come to an agreement with the Harbor Board to maintain the light, and intended to put a sum on the Public AVorks Estimates sufficient to erect the lighthouse.
