BAND OF HOPE
Tho Gisborne United Band of Hope hold a very successful meeting in Whinray’s Hall last evening, tliere being between 450 and 500 jiresent. All tlio seats wero occupied, and a number had to bo content with standing room at tlio back. The first item on the programme was the hymn in which all joined, and then Miss Johnson played a pianoforte solo in a pleasing manner. Miss Daisy Cole followed with a recitation, which was well received. Ten boys gave an interesting item, entitled “Band of Hope,” and Miss I. Andrew sang a solo, which received great applause. The next item was a recitation by Miss Kmmie fill iota, and then the Bev. Grant, who presided, gave an address. Ho made a stirring appeal to the boys and' girls to avoid tlio perils that attend the dnink, and said that some of the best and noblest of tlio men and women of tho world were brought to poverty, misery, and shame through its agency. No one was exempt from tlio risk of falling a viotim to this awful curse, and lie made reference to a member of tho House of Representatives, and held him up as an example of wha.t drink would do for a mail. Masters Harold and lbalpli Bull were the next oil the programme, and recited some nursery rhymes. Master A. Harries sang a solo. Ten girls then gave an item, entitled “The Conclave of Nations,” in which each represented a nation, being dressed in appropriate costumes. Miss Eva McKinstrey oamo next with a recitation, Miss F. Glover a solo, Master A. Cole a recitation, Mr. Goldsmith a solo, and a recitation by Master Rae Hansen. The dialogue, which concluded the entertainment, proved very iiiteresting. the parts being ably sustained. Tile programme was brought to a close with the .singing of the Doxologv at about 9.15, all having thoroughely enjoyed themselves.
