Tlio death occurred in tlio Gisborno Hospital of Patrick Clenuan, aged 50, who was being treated for a compound fracturo of the arm, sustained whilst tree-cutting in Cliilders-road. Complications which sot ill were responsible for his demise. Deceased had no relations in the colony, so far as is known.
Reporting to the committee, Mr. R. Cole, headmaster of the Mangapapa school, mentioned that the attendance for the month was fairly satisfactory, except on wet days, when the state of the road and the bridge accounted for absentees. The average for tho month was 133, and tlio roll stood at 158.
There was a chapter of accidents at tho Victoria Domain on Saturday during the progress of tlio Maori-Pa-kelia football match. Turner had the muscles of his leg severely strained, Grinlinton had his collar-bone broken and Nicolas was incapacitated for a few minutes by a nasty fall. Dr. Collins, who was an interested spectator of the game, had his hands full in attending to the injured players. Mr. D. G. Fraser, County Engineer, writes as follows: —In your report of the County meeting in this morning s issue under the heading “Belated Claim,” referring to a request from Mr. H. Bayley, I am made to say that ‘‘l doubted whether £2O worth of work had been done but that it was worth £11.” What I did say was that 1 had no doubt that £2O of work had been done and that £ll had been paid.
A most entertaining programme has been arranged for the United Band of Hope meeting, to be held ill Whinray’s Hall to-morrow evening. An item entitled “A Conclave of Nations.” the performers appearing m national costume, will ho presented, in addition to vocal numbers, recitations, and dialogues. The management are to be congratulated on the progvess made since the resuscitation of the society.

A largo number of promenaders enjoyed a stroll yesterday afternoon on the Waikanae Beach, where the City Band gave an excellent concert. The programme, which was much appreciated, included: —Quick march, “Mount Egmont”; selection. “Melbourne By Night” ; song, “Tho Glorv”; overture, “Tlio Crown of Merit” ; selection, “Elisir d’Amore”; quick march. “Mount Washington”; “God Save tho King.” Thou"h threatening, the weather fortunately remained fine, enabling the band to do full justico to the selections.
Professor Bates and Miss S. Bates, of tlio “Wild West” Show, were rewarded with a large “house” on Saturday evening. Some time was devoted to allowing local riders to try their hand at riding the bucking bullock. The display was not very brilliant on the part of the amateurs, and the spectators added insult to injury by demanding encores, hut the discomfited ones did not appear to relish the joke. The exhibition of tho Professor and his assistant was much on the lines previously reported. The show will continue, for a few days.
A recent traveller on the main coach road to AYairoa returned with a doleful account of his experience at one of tlio hotels en route. He retired to rest one night at __ about ten o’clock after a hard day m the saddle but the noise in the bar and other parts of tlio house made sleep quite impossible. The climax was reached at about 2.30 a.m. when sounds of violence caused him to rush downstairs. There he found four or five men engaged in a fierce struggle on the floor. Fortunately their inebriated condition made it impossible for them to inflict serious damage. The landlady appeared to he engaged in the elevating occupation of “sooling them on.” It is almost needless to add that the traveller in question was oil the road again at daylight and does not recommend this particular hotel as an accommodation house to liis friends. •
Political interference with various State Departments is apparently not 1 on tho decrease. The “Star” is informed on good authority that some heads of departments find it difficult to maintain discipline, since the real “boss” is frequently not the head, hut the M.H.R. for the district. A very bad case—is stated to have occurred in Dunedin lately. One of the employees absented himself for a rather protracted period. AVlien he came back he greeted some members of the -staff to whom the head was talking with easy familiarity. His first words were “AVhat Ho!” and tho rest of his conversation was like unto the first. His head naturally gasped in astonishment, which drew from tlio young man the remark, “Oh, that is all right, ‘boss,’ I am not coming hack here. Mr. has got mo a job in another department.
