The Union Co.’s s.s. Squall leaves Auckland to-day for Gisborne via Tolaga Bay and proceeds to Napier. The Union Co.’s s.s. Haupiri arrived from Auckland yesterday morning via Coast ports. Passengers: Miss Brebuer; Mesdames Duff. Manning and family, Walker, McKellar and family, Thompson and family; Messrs, de Lautour, Pemberton (2), Manning, Quigley, Kirkpatrick, Pearson, Johansen, Martin, Seen, Thompson, Cleine, ' Of the 3675 vessels which used the Suez Canal last year, 2333 were British 588 German, 200 French, and 202 flew the Dutch flag. A contract for a new 8500-ton cargo steamer for the Union Steamship Company has been placed with Messrs. Hamilton and Co., Port Glasgow. This is the first vessel built for the company in this yard. Delivery of the vessel will be given about March next.
The statement in the annual report of the International Mercantile Marine Company that it contemplated to build “a fasK steamer for the North Atlantic trade, which is to surpass anything hiterto attempted, both as regards size and luxury of appointment,” was not unexpected. With the Lusitania and the Mauretania competing on, one side of it, and the speedy German steamers on the other, the White Star Line could not, really afford to stick at 20 or 21 knots. In all probability, the projected vessel will excel anything afloat also in speed, and if this turns out the case, we may expect to see Belfast regaining the bine ribbon of the Atlantic with a turbine flier, of the first class. The new AVhite Star liner need not be much bigger than the Lusitania or tho Mauretania to excel anything in size afloat; hut it ought not to be overlooked that by 1910, which is indicated as the probable date of the new vessel’s emergence, the Ambrose Channel at New York will be completed.
