Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 15. There is phenomenal activity in the Christchurch building trade, which lias been remarkably busy for the last four years. Since Greater Christchurch was constituted four years ago a million and a half of money has been spent in buildings in the city, and 2448 buildings have been erected.

AUCKLAND, August 15. Tho mission vessel Southern Cross arrived from Norfolk Island to-day, after a stormy passage. Her jibboom was carried away, and all the sails were lost.

WELLINGTON, August 15. Henry Fairbrother, a jockey, who was injured at the recent meeting at Tremthiam, died in Wellington hospital to-day. Deceased, who was a singlo mian, belonged to Hastings. As the result of- applying a lighted match to a leak in a gas pipe a Chinaman and two Europeans had their faces burned. The force of the explosion shattered the windows in the shop, and two men who were dining in the front of the building received some injuries. The New Zealand footballers returned from Australia by the Monowai this morning.

The members of the New Zealand football team who returned to-day are: Wylie (manager), Wallace, Roberts, Mitchinson, J. Spencer, G. Spencer, Hunter, Myno-tt, Hogan, Eckhold, Piaton, McDonald, and Casey. The Auckland division wa6 to leave Sydney for Auckland yesterday. Dryer will leave on Saturday, and Booth and O’Sullivan intend returning via Melbourne. Johnston is expeoted to join the professional team. -The Union Company’s jiowerful salvage and tug steamer Terawhiiti, which was built at Leith for service in Wellington harbor and Cook Strait, arrived here this morning, in charge of Captain Ransom. Tho retail section of the Employers’ Association have decided to abandon the idea of fixing compulsory closing hours for shops within the Greater Dunedin area, it being regarded as impracticable owing to tlio faulty drafting of section 21 of the Shops and Offices Act, which would necessitate the signing of a separate requisition for each hour of closing, and the securing of a majority for each requisition. Tho matter has been referred to the Employers’ Association , which will bo represented at the annual meeting of tho Federation at AVellington on Wednesday next by Messrs. J. C. Thomson, Chisholm, Hon,ton and William Scott. A meeting of those interested in the White Now Zealand movement decided to ask tho Government to place increased restrictions on Asiatic immigration, and to amend the Factories Act in tlio direction of compelling Asiatics to work under the same conditions as Europeans. Am accident which resulted fatally occurred to Edward Broucher, unmarried, aged 30 years, at Whatitiri. He, with liis hroitlier, were engaged in cross-cutting a tree, and took charge of the saw as the tree was about to fall. His brother got away clear, and looking round saw Edward pinned to tile ground, the tree lying across his body. Great difficulty was experienced in liberating the unfortunate man. Both legs were badly broken, and lie suffered severe internal injuries. Ho was conveyed to Wha-ngarel hospital, and died an hour later. He was perfectly conscious to the last. Deceased’s parents live in England, whence Broucher came ten years ago. NAPIER, August- 15.
