The jury retired at 1.15 p.m. I and returned at 3.50 p.m. with a ver--1 I diet of guilty. Tho foreman stated ' I that the jury unanimously wishod to ; I recommend tho prisoner to mercy on I account, ol his ago (sixty). I His Honor asked what was known I of the prisoner and tho Hon. Mr. J. I A. Tole, lv.C., stated that the prisonI er had boon suspected of carrying on I this class of practice. Tho only othor I thing against him was that he had j been convicted of such minor matters las assault, etc. His Honor said that I although ho could not put to the jury I letters which were found on the priI soner whon arrested, still ho was enI titled to take them into consideration whon sentencing prisoner. It was a I well-known fact that- medical men I were frequently asked to perform such I operations and woro written to, but when it was found that a medical man, and a country oractitionor more I particulivrly, liad upon liiru when nrrested several letters of this nature trom people residing in different parts of the country and that the writers assumed that he would comply with their request, one could not nolp.roalisnig that Dalzioll had a reputation for this kind of thing. The prisoner said _ that, inquiries made by tho police showed that- these c -°*4ers had not been replied to.
His Honor said ho entirely agreed 1 vith the jury’s verdict. Though it C :nve him great pain ho had to poroi'iil a duty to the country. He oiilcl not soo liis way to sentence pri- _ oner to less than four years. Ho re- a larked that it was a much shorter j ail fence than is usually given in these uses.
I WELLINGTON, August 14. It F lO H° n - J- A. Millar, Minister of Labor was asked by a Trades and LaI bor deputation to-naglit for more stringent regulations regarding the use of scaffolding. H 0 promised to go with the Inspector and seo himself what was required. The Land and Income Tax Depart'lient is experiencing considerable difficulty m getting in its returns from those liable to assessment under this Act. As a result much inconvenience hs caused to the Department in compacting its returns. Some people apooar to take no notice of the circulars requiring them to forward tho necessary particulars. The Commissioner scarcely desires to go to the oxtromo of issuing a large batch of summonses, nit this course will have to be taken unless there is more speedy reply. Neglect to furnish returns is punishable by a fine of not less than £2 and not exceeding £IOO.
DUNEDIN. August 13. At the Police Court to-dav the Invercargill Shipping Compact- was charged with failing to supply to the I Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Dunedin tile agreement with the 'wew of the s.s. R.imu within 21 days after tho termination of the said agreement. There were also three charges against the master of the R.imu (John Bergquest) of (1) failing to cause the crew to he properly exer--ised in boat drill, (2) failing to enter in tho official log the date of boatdrill. and (3) failing to enter in the og the draught of water and extent of freeboard. For the defence it was explained -that the omissions except as regard the boat drill were due to ‘he vessel being Laid up. The action was brought as a warning to others. The magistrate said that under the
circumstances lie would fine the shipping company 20s and costs £2 9s. The captain was fined on the first charge 60s with costs £3 10s, and in the second case 20s with costs £2 9s.
