THE WEBB TESTIMONIAL.

[To tiie Editor.] Sir,—l can hardly let the remarks of the Borough Councillors’ replies to my letter go by without a reply. The- remarks of Cr. Sawyer, Mann, Somervell, and Sheridan were sensible nml to the pointy but I hardly think the remarks of Or. AVliinray were spoken in real earnest. He thinks “AVo are going to the dogs altogether.” He refers to “men who sliould have the affairs of the country at heart, shutting up shop bo see a crowd of bawling footballers.” He has to work at liis business while other men go to these exhibitions. AA'ell, I suppose his reason for working is for business reasons. Men who have a half-holiday can, 1 suppose, please themselves as to how they spend their spare time. But this has nothing to do with the subject at stake. My main object ill writing. Sir, is to inform your readers of the objects of tlio AVebb Testimonial Committee. Their object is plainly this: To get together, by means of one shilling subscriptions, enough funds to jend a presentation of some fitting

nature to AVilliam AVebb in honor of the occasion of his being the first New Zealander to win the AVorld’s Sculling Championship. This testimonial is not to form part of the proposed national testimonial, but to come’ direct and solely from enthusiasts in Gisborne who wish to show their appreciation of his win. The reason the Council was written to was on account of them being in receipt of a letter from the Mayor of AA'anganui. Those who do not wish to contribute

a shilling are not asked to do so. Those who do feel so inclined can do so to any of tlio committee or holders of lists.—Thanking you, I am. etc., S. AV. OLIVER, Hon. Sec. Committee.
