FOOTBALL.
At tho usual weekly meeting el the Poverty Bay Referees’ Association hold Inst evening at the Royal Hotel, the following referees were ap pointed for next Saturday’s matches: —'Fakehn v. Maori, on No. 1 ground. Mr. It. G. Hallamore; Junior Representatives v. Whntatutu, on No. £ ground, Mr. AY. Howard; Thirds, Tnkitdmu v. Ivaiti-City, Mr. 11. Carr. The erstwhile local five-eighths. Tommy Halberts, is playing a great game for tho Moliaka Club. In a recent match against AYairoa he scored 14 points. Jack Sceats, tho speedy forward, is captain of the AYairoa City Club, and is in great form.
AY. Riddell, last season’s junior rep. full-back, is also to the fore in football circles in AA'airoa. Harry AYepiha has developed into a firstclass place-kick, and is kept* busy finding the uprights for the North Clyde Club. Ronald AYalker, a young Gisborneite, made his debut as a footballer in AA’airoa. He started as a junior, and gained a place in the junior reps., and from there he went into the senior representatives, playing a fine game. The following’matches are set down for decision at Victoria Domain on Saturday:—Maoris v. Bakehas, Junior Reps. v. AYhahatu-tu, Ivaiti-City v. Takitimu (thirds). The Maori team to play against the Bakehas will be picked from tho following : —AY. Rangi, AVeihana, Te Reinga, Te Aorere;*Paraono, Ivaipara. Taare Raerena, Taanatiy Paaka, Euhana, Peni, Mutu, Heke, Tiimi, Kakei'e, Pine, Tuara, AYd Paraire.
HAAATvE’S BAA' BEATS HOUOAVHENUA. Press AssociationPALMERSTON, August 14. Hawke’s Bay mat Horowhenua at Levin to-day, and secured a win by 11 points to 7. The game was very interesting and fast. Tliero was no wind. Horowhenua had the best of the game, but the visitors gave a better display of Rugby. PENALTY FOR AYORRYING A REFEREE. AVELLINGTON, August 14. The Management Committee of the AA’ellington Rugby Union suspended a third-class team for kicking, punching, using foul language, and making a demonstration against a referee.

The senior contest will be resumed at Victoria Domain to-day, when Citi will-meet Jvia Ivah-a and Te Ran will meet AYest End. City and Kia KaJia have eaual points in the competition, and their game is expected to be the best yet seen this season. The City team is as follows: —Bayly, Grinlinton, Friar, Doyle, Smith, Armstrong, DaiW", Martin, Dawson. Doyle; emergencies, Rogers and Fox. The team to represent Te Rau in their match against AA’est End this afternoon will be picked from the fallowing:—Cramp, Hakowai, Pine. Brown, AVi Friday, Ellison, Mutu, Dines, Bridges, Gideon, Edwards, and Hamilton.
HAWKE’S BAY BEATS MANAAVATU. Press Association. NAPIER, August 14. A representative hockey match between Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay was played at Hastings this afternoon, bpfore a good attendance oi spectators. A well-contested game was won by Hawke’s Bay by 2 goals to nil.
GOLF.
N.Z. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 14. The New Zealand ladies’'golf championship, under the auspices of the Auckland Ladies’ Golf Club, was continued to-day, when Miss E. C. Pierce (Auckland) heat Miss G. Gorrie (Auckland), and Mrs-' Guy AAnlliams (.Auckland) heat Miss AV. Cotter (Auckland).
