TRAINING NOTES. (Special to Times.)

CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. The weather is onco more glorious and with a severe frost in prospect to-night it looks as if we were likely to he favored with good climatic conditions for a day or two yet. The work at Riccarton this morning was not exciting but it is sup posed we will see most of the horse; to-morrow., Shrapnell, stretched right out on his own, jumped 6 hurdler proficiently and Paritutu did likewise. Later on Paritutu kept up a solid pace all the way, and this performance was very attractive, the result being that he is now. a bigger favorite than ever for the Grand National Hurdle Race. Silkiveb was knocked oyer, by another horse colliding with him and this morning he seemed slightly lame when he left the track. The acceptances to-night leave little doubt that the fields will be unusually large next week. There are 23 in the "Winter Cnp, 12 in the Grand National Steeplechase, and 23 in the Gland National Hurdle Race.

HOCKEY. THE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. Notes by “Cloft Ash.” As Gisborne is to bo favoured with a visit- from tins Napier exponents of this grand old winter pastime, I feel sure that if tho local rep. team was picked, so ns to enable them to have a couple oT games together, in which to acquire the combination so ossontunl to success, .it would enchance their chance against tho Napier team considerably. The following is my selection : —Goal, J. Martin; full-backs, Wilson, Olson; halves, S. Roderick, Armstrong, Willock; wings, McGachlan.
