THE TURF.
GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. Mayo is scratched for the Steeplechase having sustained a sen us in jury through a fall during a gallop to-day.
TRAINING NOTES. (By Our Special Correspondent.) Rain set in late last night, and at daybreak it looked as if we might be in for a we* spell. By 8 o’clock, however, the -weather bad cleared, and it remained fine for tho remainder of the morning, so that .training operations at Riccarton were not interfered with. Later in tho day the sky again - became cloudy, and although we have had no more rain till outlook is far from promising at present.
Lady Annie gave Chancha ttan a break of two lengths and finished with him at tlie end of a mile, which occupied linin' 49sec, a very useful gallop. Buccleuoh’s time for a similai journey was lrnin 50 l-ssec. Heara: going comfortably at the finish, but ] can’t help thinking seven furlongs will suit him better than a mile.
Silk web galloped attractively in a seven-furlong spin, St. Bill being easily beaten in limin 35 2-5 sec. Bat Soul was much too good for Ivanoff over a mile, which she left behind in lmin 49 l-ssec, and I feel confident alio will repeat the performance in the Winter Cui>. Seaman, one of yesterday’s arrivals, moved freely in a sprinting task. He is not a beauty to look at, but lu knows how to gallop. Don Orsino ion the improve .again, as he beat Lujjland comfortably over seven furlongs. Among Hie lesser lights of the flat ' racing brigade nothing is going better than Yardo. Unfortunately tin ■l'iuland mare has a reputation foi not being over-genuine with the col ors up, but if she can be persuaded tc repeat her track form slio will be little short of a certainty for the had race on Tuesday. Some very interesting work wa: done this morning by the jumpers .some on and others in school iug tasksJWfclow Tom got through ;• sprinting task on top of long, stead} work, and appearod to pull up well Evenlode, Pipi, and St. Kooringr wore sent for a round over the bp. fonces. They jumped well, Evenlode > being the least pleasing effort, as lu lost slightly at moat of the fence:--All the same it aim/a good all-round display. Lull was/too solid for and St. Albert at- itlio oiiu of " strongly-run mil© and a quarter. It was an attractive gallop on Dull «. part, and he could have improved tin pace. Cavalry heat Southern Oros over a milo and a quarter, and side was much too good for "Vizier a' tlio end of a mile. Ben Jenson. Landlock, and Aqua Regia gave ; .capital display of jumping over sir flights Of hurdles, Ben Jonsons per - formanoe having his companions out paced throughout, but Landlock gal loped more generously than he did n the week. Le Beau created a favor able impression by heating Cuiragn: and Ability over a mile and a auar ter, the last-named pair being fully extended. , Lady Htine, Mernwai, Needlework, and Nadador were associated over mile and a half. The paco was solid all the way, and entering the straight Lady Hune and Merriwai drew on! clear, Lady Himo eventually beating the G-reat Northern winner by four lengths, with the other two severe lengths away. It was easily the best gallop Lady Hune has done since she arrived ben*, and it- looks as if slie was thriving on the work she w.as getting. If she continues to improve during the next few days she may have to bo reckoned with next week. Phaotonitis went well over a nnile. He ■ continues to please immensely in his work. Shrapnel ran a mile and a quarter in good style. Inniskilleii and Lodh Fyno were schooled over the big fences, going three _ times round. They maintained a solid paco and fenced faultlessly, the display being very attractive. Inniskillon was galloping with great freedom all the wav. and he gained many admirers. Barituha beat Wa ill aka over a mile in lmin 48sec, the best performance of the morning. On the flat Kiatere got through a serviceable gallop without being fully extended. I understand that Asteroid, who has been scratched for all engagements, over-reached . while doing a gallop at Wanga/i-ui a few days ago. A payment is due to-morrow night for tho three chief events, alien there V jriU probably, be.a thinning.out. . I f.'; 1
