A PROTECTIONIST TARIFF. United Press Association —Copyright MELBOURNE, August 8. Sir Wm. Lync delivered hia Budget to-niglit. He claimed that Australia under Federation had made a notablo advance in trade. The total revenue was £12,832,266, customs and excise contributing £9,648,662, an increase over the preceding year of £950,342. The total amount returned from the States was £7,894,842. The States received £805,000 in excess of the sum required to he paid under the Braddon clause. It is expected that the revenue from sugar m the jßfcsent year will be £47,000, compared with £122,00(5 for the previous year, while sugar excise is estimated to produce £746,000, compared with ’ 6546,000 last year. > An analysis of the tariff is not yet. i fully available but generally speaking ■ it is of a highly protective character. Increases are made in the majority 3 of lines. Clothing is raised to 40 r uid 45 per cent., woollens' are raised t to 35 per cent.
